Abstract

The aim of this article is to conduct a comprehensive study of the publications of the journal «Volnoe Kazachestvo — Vilne Kozatstvo» from 1927 to 1939, which facilitates a deeper understanding of both the historical context and the cultural and social processes occurring in Ukraine. To achieve this goal, content analysis and discourse analysis methods were employed. This approach allows for an in-depth examination of the article content to identify key arguments, ideological stances, rhetorical and linguistic strategies used by the authors to influence readers’ consciousness and shape their views. For the first time, a thorough investigation of the journal’s editorial policy in covering events in Ukrainian territories has been conducted, including the use of specific narratives, symbols, and arguments. It has been established that in the special section “In Ukraine” during the first two years, the editorial staff of the publication examined the consequences of the Ukrainian Revolution, the impact of communist rule on villages and cities, issues of famine, political repression, and terror, highlighting the deterioration of living conditions and the rise of nationalist sentiments among the population. It is noted that particular attention was given in the pages of the publication to topics of Ukrainization and Russification, as well as their effects on the cultural and intellectual elite of Ukraine. It has been determined that a distinctive feature of the journal was the publication of works by Ukrainian creative intellectuals, reflecting national ideals and Cossack traditions, as well as notes that highlighted the development and support of literary initiatives aimed at preserving Cossack heritage.
