The article highlights the peculiarities of the activities and key aspects of the functioning of the State Department for Nationalities and Migration in the field of regulating interethnic relations at the beginning of the 21st century. The scientific novelty of the study lies in a comprehensive analysis of the functioning of the State Department for Nationalities and Migration as a key instrument of state policy in the field of repatriation of deported peoples at the beginning of the 21st century. Previously unknown archival materials from the Central State Archives of the Supreme Authority and Administration of Ukraine have been identified and introduced into scientific circulation, which has made it possible to analyse in detail the practical mechanisms, problems, and achievements in the work of the state body of the migration service of Ukraine. The historical, legal, and organizational aspects of the activities of the State Department for Nationalities and Migration in the context of resolving the problems of repatriation of deported persons of various nationalities are analysed. The main focus is on the key tasks and mechanisms used by the State Department to ensure the return of deported peoples to their historical places of residence in Ukraine. The peculiarities of interdepartmental cooperation between the State Department for Nationalities and Migration and international institutions on repatriation issues have been clarified. Problems that arose during the implementation of repatriation policy have been identified and ways to solve them have been determined. The effectiveness and shortcomings of the initial stages of forming an institutional mechanism for managing migration and interethnic relations in Ukraine have been assessed. Historical experience has been systematized and generalized, which can serve as a basis for the development of modern state policy in the field of interethnic relations and migration.
