The article examines the process of formation and development of the Odesa Women’s Diocesan School in the 19th century, which became the first institution of secondary education for women in the Kherson Diocese. It is noted that it was founded on the basis of a women’s school for young orphan girls, which had been operating since 1844 at Odesa Archangel Michael Women’s Monastery. The role of the higher clergy of the Kherson diocese and representatives of the secular elite of Odesa in the process of the formation and development of women’s education is highlighted on the basis of documentary materials published in the pages of the Kherson Diocesan Gazette. It has been established that the students received adequate training to work in rural schools and colleges and as home teachers. At the same time, the school’s activities reflected the characteristic features of the Russian Empire’s educational policy: conservatism, centralized management, and Russification. This led to the formation of the students’ loyalty to the imperial authorities and a decrease in the influence of Ukrainian cultural heritage in society.
