The article is devoted to the analysis of the image of Kyiv, represented in the creative heritage of N.I. Kostomarov (1817–1885), who was a famous historian and public figure and played an important role in the initial stage of the Ukrainian national movement. The Kievan text by Kostomarov is a network of concepts related to the real city of the 19th century, to the city as an object of historical research and to the city as an ideological construction. Kostomarov believed that the national revival of Ukrainians and other Slavs, their liberation from all forms of oppression, would be based on Christian religious values, concentrated in Kyiv. He also believed that Kyiv would be the center of the unity of the Slavic peoples. Kostomarov, who claimed that the federation is the best form of statehood, was looking for the origins of federalism in Kievan Rus. In his view, the Russian Empire needed decentralization. Therefore Kostomarov offered to move the capital from St. Petersburg to Kyiv. He wanted to return to the traditions of the federalism of Kievan Rus.
